I was born and raised in San Francisco. My father was a grocer and a card player. My mother loved books. I went east to college, where I played baseball, basketball and started writing poetry. After college I sold rotis from a cart in Berkeley. Then I went to medical school. I worked at San Quentin Prison and studied public health in what was then Yugoslavia. I broke my leg on a mountain, got married and then separated the week my internship began. I started writing stories. After internship I moved to Connecticut, where I fell in love. I've been a physician for more than thirty years, much of that time caring for the poor and indigent. I've written a number of novels, including THE MOVEMENT OF MOUNTAINS; X,Y; and THE HEALER. My early stories were collected in THE BRAINS OF RATS. In addition, I’ve written a commissioned stage play and the narrative of an award-winning independent film. I want to thank my daughter for designing this website and my son for the wonderful photos. I am indeed a lucky man.
